UNITED NATIONS IPCC - The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. Having declared a Code Red, we wonder how that equated to the Defense Readiness Condition, better known as the "Defcon" warning system, in terms of war footing.

DefCon 1 is the maximum state of military readiness, with all out thermo-nuclear war imminent, Code Red (or white) leading to World War Three.

The DEFCON level is controlled primarily by the U.S. President and the U.S. Secretary of Defense through the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Combatant Commanders, and each DEFCON level defines specific security, activation and response scenarios for the troops in question.

Different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces (like the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Air Force) and different bases or command groups can be activated at different defense conditions. There is no single DEFCON status for the country, as they are decided on an individual basis by respective branches of the military.

DEFCONs should not be confused with similar systems used by the U.S. military, such as Force Protection Conditions (FPCONS), Readiness Conditions (REDCONS), Information Operations Condition (INFOCON) and its future replacement Cyber Operations Condition (CYBERCON), and Watch Conditions (WATCHCONS), or the former Homeland Security Advisory System used by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

CODE RED - The scales of war are equally applicable to the heating of the planet in terms of changing our climate. DefCon one is nuclear war imminent, maximum state of readiness. DefCon 5 is the lowest state of readiness, normal conditions.

THE CLIMATE WAR

It might help us to look upon the war against global warming in military terms. As a war to be won strategically as a series of battles.

To win the war, we need to define the strategic objectives as a series of battles. Some of the key battles United Nations Members have lost already, in making all the right noises as to agreements to curb greenhouse gases, but actually doing very little about it. This has led to a constant rise in temperatures on planet earth, that at the present rate is almost sure to lead to civil and political unrest as food insecurity escalates from accelerated desertification and reduced agricultural land to grow crops and raise livestock. The starving masses are likely to rebel - and politicians tempers fray, making their trigger fingers itchy.

HOW MUCH IS THE EARTH HEATING UP - As of early 2017, the Earth had warmed by roughly 2 degrees Fahrenheit (more than 1 degree Celsius) since 1880, when records began at a global scale. The number may sound low, but as an average over the surface of an entire planet, it is actually high, which explains why much of the world’s land ice is starting to melt and the oceans are rising at an accelerating pace. If greenhouse gas emissions continue unchecked, scientists say, the global warming could ultimately exceed 8 degrees Fahrenheit, which would undermine the planet’s capacity to support a large human population.
